White-headed Pigeons in the usual place

Post by Mick Atzeni »

As I was driving home, saw a pair feeding on the ground under a Camphor Laurel around 4pm 11/9/08 at the usual spot on corner of Curzon and Margaret Sts. They were surprisingly tame, only taking flight when a pedestrian got to within 3-4m. A wildlife encounter wasted on the pedestrian, going by her nonchalant reaction.

Thank goodness, for drive-by birders!

A dozen pigeons on Prince Henry

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Twelve White-headed Pigeons in and around a bird feeder at 108 (not 110 as reported previously) Prince Henry Drive, Prince Henry Heights, this morning around 7am. A mix of adult and immature birds. Well worth checking out if you've never had much of a look at these appealing birds, especially in numbers.

The one that got away ...

Folks

Both Pat & I forgot to mention the one the Unleaded Petrels couldn't count a week ago on the Birds Qld Twitchathon. Flew over the car at eastern end of Margaret St but only two of the four team members saw it clearly to ID it.

White-headed Pigeons thin on the ground

Post by Mick Atzeni »

My WHPs sightings locally have dropped off markedly. Camphor Laurels must be finished fruiting.

One bird seen 9/12 Prince Henry Drive. Another this morning (6.30) on powerlines along Cohoe St near Herries St, East Toowoomba.

White-headed Pigeons: 'tis the season.

Post by Mick Atzeni »

After two years at Upper Lockyer, the temporary move back up town (Middle Ridge) has reunited me with an old favourite in White-headed Pigeon. They only occasionally venture into the yard from the adjacent Glen Lomond Park. I hear them more often than I see them. This morning I walked out the front door and disturbed two that appeared to flush from underneath a flowering wattle.

Then on my way to work along the camphor laurel-lined stretch of Margaret St near the Curzon St T-junction I saw another one. Whilst this is a well-known site for them, this is my first there this year, and I drive that route daily.
