Folks,

Recently returned from a shortened trip to Lake Eyre due to poor weather - cold, windy and wet. Very few birds at Kilcowera Stn due to the drought and Lake Wyara is dry, but it managed to rain while we were there, so retreated back to the bitumen. The track from Hungerford to Wilcannia was closed as was the Darling Way from Bourke to Wilcannia. It even managed to rain at William Cr but the clouds lifted long enough one day to get a flight over Lake Eyre. It was a awesome site and well worth the trip. Saw about 200 pelicans and a few Silver Gulls. Most of the recent media film on the proliferation of bird life at Lake Eyre was bulldust, as there are no Coolabah and River Red Gums trees around Lake Eyre! Most of the film was shot further north along Cooper Creek and the Diamantina River. There is only water in the northern half of Lake Eyre North. We drove to Halligan Bay from William Cr and the wind had pushed the water to the shore line which was lucky for us. Apparently, the next day due to a wind shift the water was several kms away across the mud.

The best birds seen on the trip (unfortunately no lifers) were: Black-breasted Buzzard, Black-tailed Native-hen, Spotless Crake, Chirruping & Chiming Wedgebill, Chestnut-crowned & White-browed Babbler, Cinnamon Quail-Thrush, Gibberbird, Mulga Parrot and Little Grassbird.

Best regards,

Al & Helen
