White-headed Pigeon at Picnic Point

Post by Rod Hobson »

Folks,

Yesterday afternoon, 09.02.2010 I was taking the mutt for a walk around the base of Picnic Point, east Toowoomba. About half the way down the Firetail Walk I disturbed a lone White-headed Pigeon that was feeding on the fruit of the native Lolly Bush (Clerodendrum floribundum). I've not seen this bird feeding on this plant before and it's been quite a while since I've seen this pigeon around Toowoomba as well.

Lolly Bush is a large shrub/small tree growing to a height of about 5 metres. The plant itself is not that distinguished but when it develops its shiny black seed (a fleshy drupe) set in its vivid red and five-toothed calyx it transforms into a very commanding plant.

Regards,
