A Beach Drive on Fraser Island

Post by Rod Hobson »

Folks,

I've just received some stranding reports, with details including photographs, of some beach derelict seabirds found by my good friend and fellow employee Ivan Thrash on Fraser Island. Ivan collected these birds on a drive up the eastern beach of the island on the 25th June 2010. The specimens are in a freezer at Eurong awaiting delivery to the Queensland Museum.

Species recovered by Ivan on the morning were singles of a juvenile White-tailed Tropicbird, also Cape Petrel, Antarctic Prion, Thin-billed Prion and Fairy Prion, and two Buller's Albatross! There are very few records of this albatross for SEQ waters and these two finds are highly significant. You can't argue against 'a bird in the hand'.

Ivan discovered a dead New Zealand Fur Seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) on the drive as well, which he's also managed to jam into the freezer for the Q.M.

I do miss my days on Fraser Island.

Thanks to Ivan (and Dave Stewart) for these records.

Regards,
Rod Hobson
