Bird Conservation Management Plan – Helidon Park Rest Area

Bird Conservation Management Plan – Helidon Park Rest Area
As part of my undergraduate degree at the University of Queensland, my group is writing a management plan for conserving bird populations in Helidon Park Rest Area. I will be monitoring bird populations from the 20th March to 23rd April and would appreciate any records that TBO members may have on bird species frequenting the Park during this time or records from any time of year. Information on what the birds were doing when you saw them such as feeding, nesting or breeding would be very helpful. Please give me a call or send me an email with any records that you may have.

Trish

Below is a combined list of what was seen on the March outing and other species I've seen at the Picnic area or overhead.

I'm sure there's a few others but as I tend to only write the highlights in my diary some of the common stuff I just can't be sure I've seen there so I've left them off hoping others have been more diligent than me!

Folks, if you can add to this list, do so promptly as Trish has a report due next month from memory.

Mick,

Last Christmas (2005) there was a temporary roost of about 700 000 Little Red Flying-foxes along Lockyer Creek at Helidon. I watched them for about a fortnight until they eventually departed. During this time I regularly saw a White-bellied Sea-eagle and a Peregrine Falcon hunting bats there. I've sent this info to Trish but include it here for general readership. I also recorded Red-browed Finch and Chestnut-breasted Mannikin, which don't appear on your list.

Saw a Pacific Baza flying south over the Helidon rest area 30/07/06.

Heard Scarlet Honeyeaters while crossing the causeway.
