Coming home with a wet sail!

Same rules apply as for the "250 in 2006" Challenge. Seems 250's no pushover locally, especially in a drought! Nevertheless, 250's achievable and will continue to remain our annual target. Report sightings ASAP for everyone's benefit.

And from now on we'll just refer to it as "The Challenge".

Coming home with a wet sail!

Post by Mick Atzeni »

I didn't think it possible back in August but we just might pull it off and pip last year's total with a big December effort !

Here's the current situation:

Total 2006: 227
Total 2007: 223 to date.

Reported 1 Jan 2006 - 16 Dec 2006: 227 spp
Reported 1 Jan 2007 - 16 Dec 2007: 223 spp

Reported 2006, but not yet in 2007 (16 spp):

Brahminy Kite 21/11/2006 Flagstone Ck Rd, Toowoomba Rod Hobson
Painted Honeyeater 26/10/2006 Magpie Lane, Gowrie Junction Gloria Glass, Diana Beal (New bird for the club)
Banded Lapwing 3/10/2006 Abberton, Helidon Bill Jolly
Turquoise Parrot 2/09/2006 Highfields Falls Rod Hobson
Pied Cormorant 11/07/2006 Helidon Bill Jolly
White-backed Swallow 25/06/2006 Stockyard Ck Rd Mick Atzeni & others
Black-chinned Honeyeater 21/05/2006 Connors Rd, Helidon Mick Atzeni
Red-backed Button-quail 29/03/2006 Baillie Henderson Hospital grounds Rod Hobson
Black-breasted Button-quail 27/03/2006 Redwood Park Michael Wood
Spotless Crake 19/03/2006 Spa-Iredale Pat McConnell, Kath O'Donnell
Sooty Owl 17/03/2006 Location withheld Pat McConnell, Kath O'Donnell
Tawny Grassbird 8/03/2006 Ma Ma Rd, Lilydale Michael Wood
Latham's Snipe 18/01/2006 T'mba Waterbird Habitat Rod Hobson
Black-eared Cuckoo 8/01/2006 Abberton, Helidon Bill Jolly
Fork-tailed Swift 6/01/2006 Rangeville Mick Atzeni
Crimson Rosella 1/01/2006 Queen's Park, T'mba Mick Atzeni

Of these, I think we're a good chance of Latham's Snipe and Tawny Grassbird, a fair chance of Spotless Crake, Fork-tailed Swift and Crimson
Rosella, and a rough chance of Black-breasted Button-Quail.

Whatever the outcome, 2007 has been a great year for local rarities as indicated below.

Reported in 2007, but not in 2006 (12 spp):

Baillon's Crake 20/11/07 caught in Toowoomba CBD
Superb Fruit-Dove 7/11/07 below Picnic Point, Toowoomba
