Chequered Cuckoo Bee at Kleinton 06/04/12

It's not their fault they don't have feathers! Doesn't make them any less interesting. And just like the birds, it's good to know what species are about locally at any given time.

There's expertise within the club and beyond on most aspects of our local fauna. Let's tap into it.

Chequered Cuckoo Bee at Kleinton 06/04/12

Post by Brendon & Judi Gray »

While taking some photographs of wrens today, my 8 year old daughter spotted the most equisite blue spotted bee on a flowering weed. I managed a few photographs that were enough to identify it as the Chequered Cuckoo Bee. These cuckoo bees are just like cuckoo birds, laying their eggs in nests of others, in this case the nest of blue-banded bees.
There is a similar species that has blue stripes not spots and it is the Neon Cuckoo Bee.

It was a very exciting find and great to add another new species to our property list.
Judi.
