Red-taileds at Upper Lockyer

Since 1991, these magnificent birds have been annual visitors to Toowoomba and surrounds in fluctuating numbers and for varying lengths of time. The availability of fruiting White Cedar (Melia azerderach) dictate their local movements but how and to what extent is unclear.

Let's collectively get a better idea on their annual numbers, daily patterns of movement and local distribution. How far east do they venture each year? Do they ever reach Ipswich and Brisbane? Provide the date and time, number of birds, exact location, and what they were doing e.g. feeding in white cedar, roosting, flying east.

At 8:15 AM this morning, saw 20 birds flying south. First sighting for my patch this season.

Heard, then briefly saw, around half a dozen birds at "Tiddalac", Upper Lockyer this morning (26/3) at 8:15, heading NW.

On 12/3, saw 6 flying north at 7:35AM.

Have not had a sighting at home since 29/3 - one flying north 8.25am - but saw five birds 9.30am on 24/5 at Murphys Creek over railway station. Two birds seen in same area around 6:45am 30/5 on club outing by Olive Booth and others.

Red-taileds at Upper Lockyer / Murphys Creek

Alerted by the call, then saw a pair of Red-tails alight in a eucalypt behind the cottage around 7:15am today at "Tiddalac". First ones that have actually landed here. Normally, just seen flying overhead.

Red-taileds at Upper Lockyer along Murphys Creek

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Red-tails have been hanging around "Tiddalac" since late June and I now see them daily. Up to 20 birds have been seen, but lately around a dozen. Discovered yesterday that they camp in the large eucalypts around the neighbour's dam.

Always good to see - and hear. One of my favourites ever since they started visiting our survey area annually in the early 90's.

Cheers
