Ground Cuckoo-Shrikes

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Thanks Gloria and welcome to the forum.

I can't ever recall seeing a group that big. Just finished going through some old diaries and putting the more interesting records into an Excel spreadsheet. My records indicate 2 or 3 is the norm. Rod Hobson and I saw a pair and two immature birds at Postman's Ridge recently which is the biggest group I recall seeing.

My '80s records:

Ground Cuckoo-Shrike 16/06/1980 The Big Hill, Hodgson Vale 2 [birds]
Ground Cuckoo-Shrike 12/05/1981 opp. Cabarlah Army Barracks 2
Ground Cuckoo-Shrike 24/01/1982 just S. of Warwick 3
Ground Cuckoo-Shrike 29/06/1982 Old Toowoomba Road 2
Ground Cuckoo-Shrike 13/07/1982 Karrasch's Lagoon, Placid Hills 3
Ground Cuckoo-Shrike 11/08/1982 Hood's Dam, Helidon 3
Ground Cuckoo-Shrike 14/04/1983 Upper Lockyer
Ground Cuckoo-Shrike 31/10/1983 Bolingbroke Rd, Atkinson Dam
Ground Cuckoo-Shrike 28/10/1984 ~1 km W of Helidon 1
Ground Cuckoo-Shrike 20/07/1986 Blanchview turnoff, Withcott
Ground Cuckoo-Shrike 22/10/1989 Helidon Spa 2

Ground Cuckoo-Shrikes

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Trevor Quested (Bundaberg BOCA group) and I saw a group of six Ground Cuckoo-shrikes along Six Mile Rd, Postman's Ridge SEQ on Saturday 21/3/09.

As discussed previously, groups this size are unusual and this is the biggest group I've seen to date.

Cheers

Ground Cuckoo-Shrikes at Helidon

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Olive Booth reported she and Kevin and Kay Williams saw and photographed a group of five Ground Cuckoo-Shrikes at Murphy Bridge, Back Flagstone Ck Rd, Helidon, on 16/5/09.

Also present were Pelicans (very unusual there) and a Royal Spoonbill (proving rather scarce this year).

Thanks Olive.
