Additional species for 'Autumn Beyond - 2008'

Post by Rod Hobson »

Folks,

I've just returned from three day's fauna work in the Barakula/Auburn area north of Chinchilla. We saw some great stuff during our time there including a finding of the cave roost of six Common Sheathtail Bats (Taphozous georgianus) at Auburn, which is a considerable southerly range extension for the species. In this cave system we found a communal sloughing site of the Brown Tree Snake (Boiga irregularis) as well. We also found Herbert's Rock-wallaby (Petrogale herberti) and the mummified corpse of a Greater Bent-winged Bat (Miniopterus schreibersii) in the same area. Birds for the Autumn list from this time are as follows:

Location: Barakula State Forest (S.F. 302), Barakula, SEQ.

Dates: 29.03.08 - 01.04.08

Observers: Robert Ashdown & Rod Hobson (QPWS), Steve Wilson (Queensland Museum), Gary Alsemgeest (DPI Forestry).

Species:

Brown Falcon, Diamond Dove, Glossy Black-Cockatoo, Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoo, White-throated Nightjar, Spotted Pardalote, Speckled Warbler, Red-capped Robin, White-winged Triller, Figbird, Brown Honeyeater, Yellow-tufted Honeyeater, White-eared Honeyeater, Singing Honeyeater, Double-barred Finch.

Also Black Kite (Oakey Abattoirs) and White-breasted Woodswallow (Chinchilla) on our drive home on 1st. April.

Some other species already on Autumn list that we recorded included Australian Bustard, Australian Raven, Jacky Winter, Grey-crowned Babbler, Variegated Fairy-wren, Yellow Thornbill, Striped Honeyeater, White -plumed Honeyeater, Cockatiel, White-throated Gerygone, Rainbow Bee-eater, White-winged Chough and, at Chinchilla a Red-winged Parrot.

Other fauna of note from Barakula included five Golden-tailed Geckoes (Strophurus taenicauda) and a Speckled Monitor (Varanus tristis) - lovely reptiles. At Coondarra fire tower we also found a splendid adult female Mountain Katydid (Acripeza reticulata).

Regards,
Rod Hobson
