Folks
You may wonder what the point of these seasonal "Beyond Toowoomba" lists are, and why you should participate.
Well for starters, it's about demonstrating the seasonal diversity in eastern Australia through hard evidence; indicating what species are currently around and where. Too often we assume species should be around, or easy to find, but they're not. Then you might want to ask "What's going on?"
Secondly, it's about promoting the Toowoomba region as a great base for birders. It's hard to argue otherwise when 400+ possible species can be found within a 250km radius. Where else can you do that in SEQ? Or in Australia for that matter?
Thirdly, birders outside the local area can participate in collectively listing as many species as possible for the season within the defined area, so even your everyday sightings can count for something.
Finally, every reader potentially benefits from the information posted.
For these reasons, I'd like to think there should be a lot more participation than there has been to date. I'm open to any suggestions as to how we can improve things to encourage more participation.
The bottom line is that I'm happy to keep updating the "Wanted" list as long as you're prepared to keep chipping away at it. Let's see how things go this Spring.
One thing I don't have time to do is to cross-post records from other sources such as other clubs' bird notes and outing reports, and other forums/chat-lines such as birding-aus. But if someone else has the time and resources to pull that information together, that's fine by me.
For comments, or to have sightings posted on your behalf, or to register and thereafter post sightings directly to the forum, please email me at matzeni@westnet.com.au.
Cheers
Mick
