Ravensbourne Birds-Spring Beyond 2008

Post by Rod Hobson »

Folks,

I've just returned from showing some South African birders around a very wet and foggy Ravensbourne National Park. Despite the conditions we saw some great birds and a few of Ravensbourne's more cryptic habitues such as Red Triangle Slug (Triboniophorus graeffei) and several of the area's giant earthworms (Digaster keasti). As we drove out we saw a Laughing Kookaburra flying off with one of these worms; a considerable meal for the bird. Giant earthworms are commonly found on the soil's surface after heavy rain. This species is also common around Toowoomba and, interestingly has bioluminescent properties. A very much smaller Digaster (Digaster segentatis) is also known from Ravensbourne.

Some birds recorded this morning for the Spring Beyond-2008 list were:

Noisy Pitta
Crested Shrike-tit
Golden Whistler
Spectacled Monarch
Cicadabird
Paradise Riflebird
Green Catbird

A good morning's bird and earthworm-watching.

Regards,
Rod Hobson
