Black Honeyeater et al for Spring Beyond- 2008

Post by Rod Hobson »

Folks,

I have just returned from a delightful three days camped in the rough up at Waaje north of Chinchilla SEQ. Here we caught plenty of microbats (including Beccari's Freetail Bat) and also recorded some great birds for our sojourn. The birds included six new species for the TBO 'Spring Beyond - 2008' list.

These birds are a single male Black Honeyeater on the Chinchilla to Barakula Road at 56J - E 252912, N 7067279 on last Friday morning, 31st October. At Waaje Wildflower Scientific Reserve on midmorning of 01.11.08 we recorded Dusky Woodswallows harassing a lone Brown Falcon. At our campsite in Barakukla State Forest that midafternoon a large mixed flock of White-browed and Masked Woodswallows passed overhead. Nearby that day, on a dwindling waterhole a single Nankeen Night Heron (and about five White-throated Nightjars) put on a late evening spectacle over our trip-lines.

On the drive home yesterday afternoon I recorded a pair of Black Kites at the Oakey abattoir dam, Warrego Highway about 3.45pm.

It was a good three days.

Regards
