Anyone seen this thistle?

Can't see the plants for the birds? Your birding will be far more meaningful, particularly, once the plant-bird associations gel. Somebody find me a botanist!!

Anyone seen this thistle?

Post by Rod Hobson »

Folks,

Yesterday at Bunkers Hill on the edge of Toowoomba I found six well established Wild Artichokes or Cardoons (Cynara cardunculus). These are a large exotic pest thistle, which is common in Victoria and South Australia but only known from a very restricted area on the Darling Downs of SEQ. I've not seen this plant in this area before but would like to hear of any other sightings of this weed for my work weed data base. Yesterday's plants were growing on a black clay flood plain at S 27 deg 34.726', E 151deg 48.681'. The soil here contains a considerable amount of small stones and the area has been heavily stocked.

Thanks,
Rod H.
