White-eared Monarch

In 2006, we set up the inaugral Challenge to see if we could collectively record 250 species during the year in the club's survey area. How did we go? Extremely well considering the drought... Plenty of unusual and rare birds .... some great records from non-members too. It was a fascinating year. And a worthwhile exercise which we encourage other groups to follow. See for yourself...

White-eared Monarch

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Michael Wood and I went to Redwood Park this morning with the specific aim of looking for White-eared Monarch. Around 10am, in the vine scrub at the bottom end of the park, downstream from the bridge, we heard an unfamiliar monarch-like call which we suspected was our quarry. A couple of minutes later, we enjoying good clear views of a single bird flitting around in the canopy.

John Young mentions on his very informative website .://..johnyoungwildlife.com that this species tends to call more later in the day (10am-3pm) which may partly explain why we have so few records over the years. Our experience today certainly supports that theory as we did not hear the call earlier and it is quite a distinctive one.

A beautiful bird - and only my third sighting locally - all in Redwood Park. And Michael W's first for the local area.

High fives all round.
