Cooby Dam Notes

Post by Rod Hobson »

Folks,

I spent yesterday afternoon hiking from Loveday Cove to the dam wall of Cooby Dam and back with Robert and Harry Ashdown. We were hoping to see Musk Duck that are usually regulars here but no luck on this afternoon.

We did see some good animals, however including two large and splendid Eastern Brown Snakes, also a few Red-necked Wallabies. Birds of interest included White-bellied Sea-Eagle, Whistling Kite, Variegated Fairy-wren and a single Great Cormorant. Birds were keeping low generally though due to the blustery conditions.

The basaltic scree slopes along this walk are good places to look for a locally rare native pig weed (Portulaca bicolor). The plants that I saw yesterday had just finished flowering, although it can flower almost anytime throughout the year.

Additional species for the 'Summer Beyond - 2008-09' posting seen here were:

White-browed Scrubwren
Speckled Warbler and,
Pallid Cuckoo (Kleinton)

Regards,
Rod Hobson
