Two more - and a new record :-)

Thanks to replenishing rains in the Lockyer Valley, we're well placed for a record haul in 2009. No excuses why we can't give 250 spp a real shake. Over to you ...

Two more - and a new record :-)

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Dodging the rain, Russell Jenkins and I had a great time in the Lockyer today (30/12). Amongst other things, we picked up two new birds for the Challenge - a Latham's Snipe at Helidon Spa, and a pair of Cotton Pygmy-geese at Hood's Lagoon, Helidon. While Cotton Pygmy-geese are seen around Gatton fairly regularly, our eastern boundary is further west (between Helidon and Grantham) and these are the first in our local area for yonks - 18 May 1986, also at Hood's, according to my records.

These two additions means we now have 228 species for the year, beating the previous record of 227 spp set in 2006. And with a day to spare!

To all those who supported this year's Challenge, a big thanks and well done :-)

Cheers

Mick
