Square-tailed Kite

Post by Mick Atzeni »

The first Square-tailed Kite record - and won't be surprised if it's the only one for the year - has been the result of a photo submitted for ID by a member of the public. By sheer coincidence, this happened early last year too with a photo from Arthur Chapman of a bird at Kearney Springs:

This year it was Rob Hayes, Gordon Cres. Table Top Estate, Withcott, who photographed one perched in his tree about three weeks ago and sent pics to TBO member Ken McKeown for ID.

Thanks Rob for having the presence of mind to take photos and enquire. A great local record and one I'm glad is off the wanted list.

Another sighting - my own

Post by Mick Atzeni »

As luck would have it, saw two Square-tailed Kites low over Withcott on the northern side of the highway opposite the IGA store this morning around 11:30.

It's only my fourth sighting in the local survey area. The three others were all around Helidon as follows:

04/05/1986 Hood's Dam, Helidon
28/09/1986 Airforce Rd near Helidon Dip
03/03/1996 Hood's Dam, Helidon

As you can see, it has been 14 years between drinks, locally.

Cheers

:D
