Musk Duck and Cotton Pygmy-goose

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Bill Jolly and I checked Hood's dam at Helidon together this afternoon and were rewarded with a female Musk Duck and a male Cotton Pygmy-goose, both new for the year.

I haven't seen a Musk Duck in the survey area since 1989 when a bird turned up at the Helidon Spa for several weeks. Today's sighting is only my fourth in the survey area. Interestingly, it has been a single female bird each occasion:

Musk Duck 19/12/1983 Hood's Dam, Helidon MA 1 female; Found originally by Terry Reis & Brian Foulis 17/12; first TBO record
Musk Duck 19/02/1984 Hood's Dam, Helidon MA 1 female
Musk Duck 5/10/1986 Hood's Dam, Helidon MA 1 female
Musk Duck 15/01/1989 Helidon Spa MA 1 female
Musk Duck 28/02/1989 Helidon Spa MA 1 female
Musk Duck 27/03/1989 Helidon Spa MA 1 female

Has anyone ever recorded a male Musk Duck in the survey area? More than one bird?
