Lesser-crested Terns, Manly

Post by gileas »

Hi all,

I ducked down to the wader roost at Manly yesterday before work, and was pleased to see a flock of 11 Lesser-crested Terns in amongst about 500 overwintering shorebirds. Surprisingly, there were about 15 Pacific Golden Plovers in partial breeding plumage at the roost, a bird not usually present at the site through winter in my experience. This could be a group that made a partial migration but didn't reach the breeding grounds and returned early.

There were also about 20 Double-banded Plovers, some in very good breeding plumage, and a single Gull-billed Tern. Out over the bay were a handful of Australasian Gannets, a bird I've not seen on Moreton Bay before.

Lesser-crested Tern was bird #317 for the year. July should be a good month, with a winter pelagic coming up, and visits to Girraween, Sundown and Lamington to hopefully grab a few more ticks before spring rolls in.

Regards,
Chris Sanderson
