Some more from the Gold Coast and beyond

Post by Nicholas Matheson-Kozakis »

While Mum and I have been holidaying at the Gold Coast we've done a little snooping in birding areas and found a few new species for the Winter count:

Tallebudgera Creek 1 July
Little Terns

Tweed River (reserve near mouth and the boardwalk area) (2 July)
Australian Pied Oystercatcher
Intermediate Egret
Little Egret
Caspian Tern
Mistletoebirds
Forest Kingfisher

Currumbin Valley area (30 June)
Eastern Rosella
Australian King Parrot

Ballina Sewerage Works (29 June)
Australiasian Shovellers (including a carcass on the banks)
Chestnut Teals
Hardheads
Purple Swamphens
Blackwinged Stilt

Lake Ainsworth Lennox Head (29 June)
Little Friarbird

I wish I could add the free range plumed and wandering whistling ducks we saw at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary as sometimes there is only the plumed variety but this time wandering were there too.

However, while at Currumbin Sanctuary, Mum had a gorgeous little female rufous whistler continually sit on the fence behind her as she was resting on a bench next to a fence. The pair of them had such rapport as she (the whistler, not Mum - you wouldn't want mum to do this) kept singing whenever she was next to Mum.

Thanks, Nick :D
