What is the best way of keeping bird records?

Post by Brendon & Judi Gray »

We have been going over our bird records lately, and I think there must be a better way of keeping them. I wanted to hear experts thoughts on how they record their sightings. Do you do it on computer with a database or write records down in date form? And if written in date form do you just re-read the whole record to access past information? May seem like a strange question, but would love to hear others' opinions.

Databases

I haven't used any commercial birding database but I should! Have just mucked around with a simple one in Microsoft Access to do some basic queries for the Challenge on this forum.

Did a quick search on Google... Have a look at this site:

.://..netspeed.com.au/birds/birdinfo/

and see the comments of at least one happy user who you may wish to contact for advice:

.://..trevorsbirding.com/bird-records/

I see that there is also an internet database Eremaea Birds which you can use:

.://..eremaea.com/WhoIs.aspx?Culture=en-AU

Hope this helps!

Cheers
