SunBOG outing Baroon Pocket Dam, North Maleny,7/5

Post by Russ Lamb »

A very foggy 7am start did not deter a small but keen group of Sunshine Coast birders on their May 7th outing to the southern end of Baroon Pocket Dam. As the fog lifted more waterbirds became apparent on the lake and passerines began calling from the euc.woodland. Morning started well with a pair of Tawny Frogmouth near the car-park. A pleasant 2hour walk provided a total of 65 species (incl. 8 heard only), a better than expected tally for late autumn at this site.
Additions to the Autumn Beyond list were:
Hardhead
Grey Goshawk (regularly seen here)
Rose Robin (most folk's first sighting this year)
New Holland Honeyeater (infrequently seen at southern end of Blackall Range).
Best of the rest were Azure Kingfisher, Fan-tailed Cuckoo and White-headed Pigeon.

I also added Wandering Whistling-Duck (8 in total) from a visit to Buckley's Hole, Bribie Is on Fri 13/5.
