Black Swan, Great Cormorant and others

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Purple Swamphen 11/12/11 Hood's lagoon, Helidon Mick Atzeni
Eurasian Coot 11/12/11 Hood's lagoon, Helidon Mick Atzeni
Black-winged Stilt 11/12/11 Hood's lagoon, Helidon Mick Atzeni
Rufous Songlark 11/12/11 creek crossing, Lockyer Siding Mick Atzeni
Black Swan (4) 10/12/11 "Tiddalac", 68 Thomas Rd, Upper Lockyer Mick Atzeni
Great Cormorant (1) 10/12/11 "Tiddalac", 68 Thomas Rd, Upper Lockyer Mick Atzeni
Richard's Pipit 9/12/11 Murphys Creek township Mick Atzeni

The Black Swans were a stately addition to the "Tiddalac" list - bird #157.

Little Lorikeets have been here daily this summer; forgot to add them originally.

The Bush-hens are now resident just upstream of the cottage and I see one, sometimes two most days from the deck if I wait long enough.

There were 6+Wandering Whistling Ducks at Hood's lagoon, Helidon on 11/12, but not much else of note.

Cheers

Beeater, Pelican, Brown Falcon

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Three more from my area:

Australian Pelican (2) 22/12/11 overhead, "Tiddalac", 68 Thomas Rd, Upper Lockyer
Rainbow Bee-eater 22/12/11 heard overhead, "Tiddalac", 68 Thomas Rd, Upper Lockyer
Brown Falcon 20/12/11 Murphys Creek Road, Lockyer

Incidentally, Bush-hen seen twice today from the deck, first around 0530 hrs, then briefly at 1715 hrs after his evening poke along the water's edge. I've discovered one only has a very narrow window of opportunity to see this bird on any given day; it is true to its name 99% of the time.

Cheers

Two more from Upper Lockyer

Post by Mick Atzeni »

This morning, saw Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters and Fuscous Honeyeaters along Thomas Rd, about 700m past "Tiddalac" entrance, Upper Lockyer.

Bush-hen kindly showed well for me for Christmas at around 5:40am.

Cheers

Varied Sittella

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Don't see them very often at home but there was a party of Varied Sittellas in the trees at the entrance to Tiddalac this morning.

Re the bush-hens, the female (I assume) and her two gangly youngsters showed well this morning, poking along the water's edge, and then mum had a bath and preen. Young are still downy black with some brown primary feathers starting to appear.

Curiously, have not seen her mate since the chicks were born. Nor have I heard two birds calling. Maybe parenthood proved all too much and dad's done a runner???

Cheers

Parenthood

Maybe the Mum took off to enjoy the last of the summer and left 'em with Dad :-)
