Hi all,
A start-up for Summer Beyond 2011-12. Brendan Cook discovered three Little Curlew at Amberley RAAF base on Fri 2 Dec. I saw these birds early this afternoon, distantly from Behms Road on the eastern side of the base. Accessed south from Old Toowoomba Road, the birds were feeding in depressions in the grassland on the airfield, and could go missing for periods of time when in one of the dips.
For anyone trying for these birds, they were quite distant and early morning before the heat haze kicks in would be best. However, views were adequate with a 'scope when the sun went behind the clouds. Try along Behms Road past the doglegs in the road, and view the airfield to the west looking towards the hangers and the birds were in the area in front of markers 3 and 4.
Also on the airbase to pad out the list for starting summer beyond a bit, were Australian Pipit, Welcome Swallow, Magpie, Straw-necked and White Ibis, Masked Lapwing and Torresian Crow.
Nearby were Common Koel, Channel-billed Cuckoo, Sacred Kingfisher and Whistling Kite.
Rob Morris was also at the airfield, and he ventured on to nearby Rosewood, and Bremer Road, where he saw the pair of Painted Snipe on the lagoon to the south of the Rosewood Road, as well as Cotton Pygmy Geese.
A good start to the season!
Cheers
Andy
