Satin Flycatcher, Highfields Falls

Provided flooding rains don't spoil the party again, only slackness will prevent us nailing 230+ species this year.

Satin Flycatcher, Highfields Falls

Post by Andrew Stafford »

Hello all,

After a morning at Broadwater NP west of Dalby, I made a quick drop-in to Highfields Falls on the way home. It turned into a very good decision when I picked up a female Satin Flycatcher hawking high in a eucalypt not far from the track entrance, which was also full of honeyeaters and lorikeets.

It actually wasn't the highlight of the visit, though, because the flycatcher, lorikeets and honeyeaters suddenly panicked, hid and/or scarpered as a very WHITE Goshawk cruised in and casually alighted on the very same tree - from where it took a quick look around, spotted me staring agape at her and just as casually flew off.

The Flycatcher quickly returned and continued about its business. I presume it's on passage north. A very tricky bird anywhere in SE Queensland and new for The Challenge, I believe.
