Red-winged Parrots

Provided flooding rains don't spoil the party again, only slackness will prevent us nailing 230+ species this year.

Red-winged Parrots

Post by Mick Atzeni »

My friend Peter Vernon rang me on his way into town after seeing a pair of Red-winged Parrots at Hodgson Vale around 3:45pm today. They flew across the main road just north of The Lion's Park picnic area.

This is a very unusual species in the Toowoomba area. I reckon you could count the number of records since 1975 on two hands. The irony is Peter, who is more of a casual birder - I'm working on him! - didn't realise the significance of his sighting until after I told him. He has had a pair around his Hirstglen property about 15km to the south this year (outside our local survey area though) which we spoke about earlier this year so he just thought he should mention these. I'm glad he did!

Thanks Peter.

Cheers
Mick
