Non-wader watching at Toorbul

Post by Russ Lamb »

Spent a good day at Toorbul on 16/7, tide was low so not much wader-watching. But plenty of water and other birds, got a list of 64 species which includes a stop at Bishop's Lagoon on the way into Toorbul. Some big species numbers, 133 Plumed Whistling Duck on a farm dam next to Bishop's Lagoon, 53 Masked Lapwing on the marsh itself, 18 Common Myna, and 87 Black-winged Stilt and 86 Black Swan at Toorbul. Bird of the day was Striped Honeyeater (2) in the mangroves. Additions to Winter Beyond at Toorbul are:

Eastern Great Egret
Wandering Whistling Duck
Chestnut Teal
Aust. Pied Oystercatcher
Eastern Curlew
Collared Kingfisher
Sacred Kingfisher
Mangrove Gerygone
Mangrove Honeyeater
Little Friarbird

Also spent a pleasant morning yesterday, 23/7, at a new (for me) site on Coochin Creek, Beerwah where best bird was a White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike. Following can be added to Winter Beyond:
Peaceful Dove
Varied Triller
Rose Robin
Large-billed Scrubwren
Olive -backed Oriole.

Closer to home was pleased to get:
White-headed Pigeon 16/7 Maleny
Brown Cuckoo-Dove 9/7 Maleny
Southern Boobook 17/7 Maleny
New Holland Honeyeater 9/7 Baroon Pocket Dam, North Maleny
Green Catbird 7/7 Maleny
