Culgoa Floodplain NP

Post by Alastair Silcock »

Spent two days last week at Culgoa Floodplain NP west of Hebel (so outside 250km radius). I'd never heard of it (first gazetted 1994 and added to since then) but it had an interesting mix of waterbirds (20 species) at the near-permanent lagoons with arid land species away from the watercourses.
80 species all up, including white-winged wren, crested bellbird, glossy ibis, white-bellied sea-eagle, Major Mitchell cockatoo, budgerigar, blue bonnet and squatter pigeon.
Hundreds of masked and white-browed woodswallows camped at the lagoon.
Also spent two days at Thrushton NP north-east of Bollon. Some of the most frequently species seen during the week in the Maranoa region included rainbow bee-eater, four varieties of woodswallows, red-capped robin, rufous whistler, white-plumed honeyeater and striped honeyeater.
Only wanted list sighting within the 250km radius was emu, 20km west of Goondiwindi on Barwon Highway (on 5/10).

regards
Alastair
