Letter-winged Kite

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Have an unconfirmed report from Peter Vernon of a single bird on the powerlines as you turn out of the Millmerran Power Station. It was seen around 10pm last Saturday night (23/3).

Using his headlights, Peter was able to note the relatively large eyes compared to a Black-shouldered Kite, a species he's very familiar with and has never seen on powerlines that late at night. Nor me for that matter. Interested to hear from anyone that has.

The bird didn't take flight so he didn't see the underwing. However, he has seen a Letter-winged Kite once before on his own property at Hirstglen, including the diagnostic underwing pattern. Peter is only a casual birder but is very observant. I'm prepared to accept this record based on what he told me but happy to discuss.

If you are out that way, keep an eye out and please let us know if you see any.

Cheers
Mick
