Winter update

Post by Bill Jolly »

Just back from a lengthy trip, and thank you very much to Michael Wood for keeping the Abberton list up to date while we were away.

Below are some winter records taken from Michael's Abberton lists of spp still showing as Wanted for winter.

Of special note, Eastern Ospreys were at Abberton during June, July and August, with two birds present on Sunday 4th August.

Eastern Ospreys

Post by Bill Jolly »

Having seen two Eastern Ospreys in the same tree here a few days ago, I've just reviewed the records of previous sightings at Abberton.

The first Osprey recorded here was in April 1990, then none till September and November 1999. After that just one or two sightings a year to the end of 2004, mostly in spring.

Then none at all for nearly seven years (including the big drought and the big flood) until November 2011.

However, since May last year we've had Ospreys here every month excepting only for an apparent gap in December 2012, and January 2013. (That's awkward wording in order to imply that maybe I missed them then).

However, since then, we've seen one here every month this year, culminating in our first sighting of two birds together last week.
