Bird Places of the Lockyer Valley

Post by Russ Lamb »

Road-tested the above brochure sponsored by BirdLife Southern Qld and Friends of Lake Apex over last weekend. Saw a total of 103 species for trip which took-in 10 of the 14 sites listed in the brochure, as well as Gatton Forest Reserve and Pine Mountain Bush Reserve back towards Ipswich. Total of 11 raptors, and 15 duck/geese/swan/grebe. Best birds were Freckled Duck. Little Lorikeet, Hoary-headed Grebe, Speckled Warbler, Weebill and Varied Sitella, all rarely, if ever, seen on my home patch on the Blackall Range.

Very good list, Russ. Missed some of yours including the Freckled Duck but can add these for the same weekend.

Brown Goshawk 23/03/13 Adare Rd lagoon, Adare Dinah Greenlees, Russ Jenkins & Mick Atzeni
Black Falcon (pair) 23/03/13 Jahnkes Lagoon, Gatton Dinah Greenlees, Russ Jenkins & Mick Atzeni
Comb-crested Jacana 23/03/13 Karraschs Lagoon, Placid Hills Dinah Greenlees
Red-kneed Dotterel 23/03/13 Karraschs Lagoon, Placid Hills Dinah Greenlees, Russ Jenkins & Mick Atzeni
Black-fronted Dotterel 23/03/13 Karraschs Lagoon, Placid Hills Dinah Greenlees, Russ Jenkins & Mick Atzeni
Jacky Winter 23/03/13 Adare Rd, Adare Dinah Greenlees, Russ Jenkins & Mick Atzeni
White-breasted Woodswallow 23/03/13 Adare Rd lagoon, Adare Dinah Greenlees, Russ Jenkins & Mick Atzeni

Also of interest was a Great Crested Grebe on the dam at Lowes Rd, Placid Hills - first sighting there as far as I know, and 100+ Black Kites in a freshly ploughed paddock at Grantham, the majority perched quietly on the ground.

Surprised we didn't run into each other at some stage Russ! If you like, next time you're planning to come down let us know and I can show you around my patch.

Cheers
Mick

Mike, trip was a bit spontaneous, found myself baching when partner took herself off to Melbourne at short notice. Although I must admit I do like solo birding these days, being somewhat shy and reserved in my dotage. And here was I thinking I'd done well to see a dozen Black Kites. 100!! Sounds like NT stuff.
