Over the last three years of living at Stoneleigh, Striated Pardalotes have become a constant beautiful distraction from daily chores. There is a pair which up until this year have nested under the boulders on the slope near the house. On Sunday (1/9/2013) I walked around the corner of the shed and spotted the pardalotes on the overhead telephone cable as is normal, but then one of them flew straight to a disused 200lt drum we had used in the past for the burning of our paper rubbish (no TRC presence out here), which is full of rock hard ash and identified there new nesting tunnel where a section of drum had rusted and fallen away.
Ingenious and resourceful birds. I love them
