Noisy Pitta

Post by Michael Wood »

Despite a late start, I had a great morning inside Redwood Park today with a Noisy Pitta seen well on the upper (northern) part of the Ferny Gully Track. My first record of this species for this location. (Note: there was an earlier record of this species at a private property at Ballard but I do not have any further details.)

Other great sightings here for the morning were of at least two russet-tailed thrush foraging near the Bridge Street entrance and three regent Bowerbird at Eagles Nest Spring.

Great find! Been years since we've had a pitta record from Redwood Park. In the 80's, they used to be more regular. The subsequent prolonged drought really knocked the stuffing out of Redwood but it's attracting more of the rainforest species again. Out of curiosity dug out the dates for my Redwood pitta records below:

20/11/1980
21/11/1980
11/8/1982
25/8/1982
29/8/1982
9/12/1982
24/9/1983
8/8/1984
22/9/1984
29/11/1984
13/2/1987
1/10/1989
14/10/1989
19/11/1989
12/4/1993

Now just have to find those Black-breasted Button-Quail. Haven't seen any in there since five birds on 26/6/1993!

Cheers

That's a lot of sightings, Mick -many more than I would have imagined. The eighties seemed to be particularly good for them there.

Didn't Rod Hobson record one there a few years ago, an audible record from memory?

Cut my teeth in Redwood and spent lots of time in there in the '80s. Some of the records are heard only.
