White-bellied Cuckoo-Shrike

Thanks to replenishing rains in the Lockyer Valley, we're well placed for a record haul in 2009. No excuses why we can't give 250 spp a real shake. Over to you ...

White-bellied Cuckoo-Shrike

Post by Mick Atzeni »

A very co-operative White-bellied Cuckoo-Shrike along Connors Rd, Helidon this morning for anyone with a half-decent camera and lens - alas not me.

Followed it for about 20 minutes with my little digital camera. At one stage it was engaging in some very unusual behaviour reminiscent of a kookaburra belting a snake against a branch - only substitute the snake for a sprig of eucalypt leaves. Didn't appear to achieve anything by doing it. I can only surmise it was hoping to "flush" something edible. Did this for a 2-3 minutes before dropping it to the ground. Has anyone observed similar behaviour?

Cheers
