East Perth St (Rangeville) and Lake Annand

Do you keep a monthly record for your favourite patch? If so, why not share the info real-time and literally put your patch on the map? Using the template under this heading you have the vehicle for displaying your monthly records for those places you bird regularly e.g. your backyard, neighbourhood, local park. Just how good is your patch? What can we learn from your monthly records?

Let's find out ...

East Perth St (Rangeville) and Lake Annand

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Species recorded 1/7/06 - 30/6/07 : 72
Species recorded since 1992 : 105 as at 30/6/07

My Patch includes my home (53 Perth St, Rangeville, Toowoomba), the immediate neigbourhood, and Lake Annand, about 100m down the road. For the benefit of those not familiar with Toowoomba, Lake Annand is a recreational parkland and ornamental lake with plenty of resident Pacific Black Ducks and Wood Ducks but unfortunately not much else in the way of waterbirds on any given day. However you do get the occasional surprise and for that reason alone it's always worth a look.

The list below is what I've seen in my patch since 1992. Those species bolded have been recorded at some stage since July 2006. An asterisk (*) indicates the species was recorded during that month. For the more unusual species I also include comments.

Other records welcome for my patch!

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Folks

I know others traverse my patch often enough, particularly Lake Annand, so I'm more than happy for this exercise to be a collective effort. I know Rod could add to the list for starters. Regan Scheuber also.

So, if you've seen species I haven't, whether historically or just for the current month, simply post a reply to this forum topic with the details and I'll update the master list.

Thanks in advance.

Red-browed Firetail!!

Post by Mick Atzeni »

A single Red-browed Firetail was in the bird feeder this morning.

We've been here 15 years and this is the first time we've had one.

A large increase in Figbirds in the area over the past couple of days too.

Those utterly, unpredictable Brown Thornbills!

Post by Mick Atzeni »

It was not being able to recall when and how often Brown Thornbills and Grey Butcherbirds turn up in my yard that gave me the incentive to start keeping a separate monthly list for my patch at the start of last year.

Well today, I saw my first Brown Thornbill in the yard for this financial year. Big deal you say, but looking at last year's records for the same period I note I had them July through to September, but not in October. Hmmm ... hardly a trend. Perhaps I've been a bit harsh on myself?!

In comparison, Grey Butcherbird's proving far more predictable. I didn't get one in the second half of 2005 and it's been the same situation so far this year.

Ah, the insights and benefits of keeping monthly records!

Cheers

Pink-eared Duck at Lake Annand, Toowoomba

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Hit the jackpot this morning, as I mentioned for the Challenge, with 5 Pink-eared Duck at Lake Annand.

After being pretty uneventful most of Summer, things have finally started to hot up in the yard with a few interesting sightings this month such as White-winged Triller, Leaden Flycatcher, Red-tailed Blacks, Sacred Kingfisher and Spangled Drongo.

Cheers

Great Egret - new for my patch

Post by Mick Atzeni »

A Great Egret at Lake Annand late yesterday afternoon brings my personal patch list since July 2006 to 69. My goal is now to record 75 species by the end of the financial year.

I will add Rod's recent Magpie Goose sighting at Lake Annand in too, so that leaves 5 to go. Keeping a close eye on L. Annand, given the extreme drought, is the most likely source of new birds, although there are a few 'easy' passerines to get as you will see from my monthly table above.

Please feel free to help me out.

Cheers

Grey Fantail ... finally!

Post by Mick Atzeni »

It's taken more than 10 months but finally scored a Grey Fantail in our yard yesterday. Brings the tally up to 72 species for the financial year.

Royal Spoonbill at L. Annand last Saturday.

Wedge-tailed Eagle

Post by Mick Atzeni »

A rather small Wedgie flew over Perth St this morning with a crow in hot pursuit. Exciting for me because I can't recall the last time I saw a wedgie in my patch. In fact, it's always a thrill to see any sort of raptor around home. They're very hard to latch on to without some resident Noisy Miners to alert me, like they do at work (DPI&F)!

Scarlet Honeyeater 3/10/07

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Had a male Scarlet Honeyeater in our melaleuca today. First I've seen here for at least 18mo.

Their forays into town are far from predictable. Some years they're numerous and other years they don't appear at all, even though they are present in the local bushlands every year.

This spring they're thick around the escarpment, particularly in Redwood Park, so I suspect I'll see a few more around home this season.

Eurasian Coot roadkill

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Curious new addition to the list - a dead coot on the corner of Perth St and Tourist Rd this morning. No waterbody there! Very foggy last night around the top of the range which probably contributed to its demise.

Nearest coots are at the Toowoomba Waterbird Habitat on Alderley St. Have never recorded one at Lake Annand.

Fog seems to be problematic for other waterfowl too. I saw a dead Plumed Whistling-duck on the corner of North and Mary Sts, Mt Lofty, a year or so ago after a foggy night.

Had a special day's birding, particularly skyward, from the back yard today.

A new one for my patch was Pied Cormorant. A tell-tale V-shaped skein of these birds flying over drew my attention and then about a minute later I got a far better look of a single one flying alongside a Great Cormorant which was a good opportunity to see the size difference - the Pied is a slightly smaller bird.

Also a pair of Yellow-billed Spoonbills which I haven't seen for years in my patch.

An immature Sacred Kingfisher appeared in the backyard this morning. A Brown Thornbill this afternoon.

Spangled Drongo

Post by Mick Atzeni »

A Spangled Drongo in the neighbour's yard today.

Interestingly, my only record here last year was also in February - 25th.

Collared Sparrowhawk

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Collared Sparrowhawk over home yesterday afternoon (26/04/2008). As I've said before, any raptor in my patch is usually a bonus! Had a Hobby recently too on the neighbour's antenna across the road.

Seventy species so far for the financial year. Need only three more to beat last year's tally.
