Wandering Whistling-Duck

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Folks

Scanned Hood's dam at Helidon this morning and picked up four adult Wandering Whistling-Ducks. One pair had evidently bred with 3-4 good-sized young huddled together on the edge of the dam. This species seldom ventures into the survey area and can't recall any breeding records.

Also present were four Magpie Geese (only the second record for 2010), and a pair of Jacanas with two young, another rare breeding record.

Plenty of Welcome Swallows and both species of martin over the paddock below the dam wall. Was hoping for a White-backed Swallow which turned up at Hood's occasionally back in its halcyon days in the '80s and '90s. Dam is looking promising. Just unfortunate we can now only survey it with a scope from the roadside.
