Inglewood weekend

Post by sburke »

Recently Jeff had to complete a 2 week Uni stint at the Inglewood Hospital so we decided to have a weekend at the Lake Coolmunda Caravan Park to cut down on the 3 hour drive everyday. So what was I going to do while Jeff was at work........go birding of course. The weather was wet on the Friday night when we arrived so I was not confident of having a lot of success.

Saturday morning dawned quite clear but we had a flat tyre so spent all morning trying to find someone to put a tube in the tyre. Jeff went to work in the afternoon and I headed off around the dam (the park near the dam wall is still closed however). The private camping area near the southern end of the dam proved a good birding spot with Restless Flycatchers, Striped and Spiny-cheeked H'eaters and Common Bronzewings. I also found a great campsite on the waters edge for future use. I did the circuit around the dam and was rewarded with a sighting of a pair of White-bellied Sea-Eagles at the southern end of the dam.

After packing up on Sunday morning I headed down the Inglewood/Texas road and detoured off the road 20.8 km south of Inglewood into a State Forest, which used to be a sheep property, and did some exploring there. The tracks are very good although there is a creek crossing that would require a 4WD. I was excited by the variety of birdlife here including Wedge-tailed Eagle, Brown Falcon, White-eared, White-naped, Brown, Fuscous, Striped and Spiny-cheeked H'eaters, Red-capped Robins and lots more.

On the way back to Inglewood to pick Jeff up from the hospital I stopped at the north branch of Catfish Creek and was even more excited to get all of the above honeyeaters as well as White-bellied Cuckoo-shrikes and Eastern Shrike-tits. It is a terrific spot and only a few metres off the main road on a side track into a locked gate.
