White-browed Woodswallows at Stoneleigh

Post by sburke »

I had an amazing new experience this afternoon. We had just returned from kayaking at Yarramalong Weir, hopped out of the car and heard the chatter of woodswallows above. I looked up with my binnies to see a very widely dispersed group of White-browed Woodswallows wheeling around the house. While watching they all began to group together into a much smaller flock, very similar to a school of fish, and their flight took on a "dance-like" quality of up and down movements and then round and round. All while fairly tightly bunched together. Over the next five minutes they repeated this dispersment and coming together pattern another four times over the house, continually chatting, before continuing in a south-westerly direction. I estimate the flock number at 80.

I felt quite priviledged to see this performance.
