Masked Woodswallow

Provided flooding rains don't spoil the party again, only slackness will prevent us nailing 230+ species this year.

Masked Woodswallow

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Two mixed flocks (~30 around noon; 150+ around 3pm) of Masked and White-browed Woodswallows yesterday over Mt Lofty (Boyce Gardens, Mackenzie St). They were travelling in a westerly direction.

Keep your eyes/ears open for more over the next month or so. Be good if we can pick up a Black-faced amongst them too.

Cheers

Masked and White-browed Woodswallows

Hi Michael

The same thing was going on here on Saturday - thanks for your phone call by the way.

Michael Wood and I saw at least 100-150 in one flock at Abberton between 8 and 9am at Abberton, predominately White-browed.

Throughout the day several more largish flocks came over, all heading more or less NW-ish.

I believe Michael W saw a very much larger flock earlier in the day, which he will no doubt post.

Hello Mick and Bill

Yes, you are correct, Bill. Early on Saturday morning there was a very large flock (>1500 birds) of mixed woodswallows seen along Little Oakey Creek Road, just north of Withcott. The overwhelming majority were white-browed, but there was the odd masked woodswallow among them. Interestingly, they too eventually headed off in a westerly direction.

Another huge flock of mixed woodswallows numbering a couple of thousand were in the skies over Darling Heights yesterday afternoon. The make-up of the flock appeared to be somewhere in the vicinity of 25-33% and 75-66% masked and white-browed woodswallows respectively. They were busy on the start of a large rain front, which ended up dropping hail.
