How to nail three more in three days.

Same rules apply as for the "250 in 2006" Challenge. Seems 250's no pushover locally, especially in a drought! Nevertheless, 250's achievable and will continue to remain our annual target. Report sightings ASAP for everyone's benefit.

And from now on we'll just refer to it as "The Challenge".

How to nail three more in three days.

Post by Mick Atzeni »

Pat & Kath's Spotless Crake today brings the tally up to 225 spp.

That leaves us with three species to get in three days if we are to go one better than last year.

Can we do it? Yes, with a solid effort and a little luck and here's how:

Tawny Grassbird - try any of the rank vegetation at creek crossings around Helidon and Lower Flagstone Ck, particularly the crossings near the Flagstone Ck school. Responds well to pishing.

Fork-tailed Swift - keep your eye on the sky! The current weather conditions at this time of year make these a genuine chance. Pretty sure I saw two a couple of days ago fly over Rangeville but didn't have my binos handy.

Latham's Snipe - carefully scan the edges of any waterbodies in the area; walk along creeks in a bid to flush one, if you have access.

Banded Plover - scan any bare paddocks (if any left!) around Carpendale & Lower Flagstone Ck

Crimson Rosella - check Queens Park. Recorded there (Campbell St end) around this time last year.

White-backed Swallow - try Back Flagstone Ck, Spa Iredale-Rd, Euston Rd (near the quarry).

Red-backed Button-Quail & King Quail - if you know/see someone harvesting lucerne in the area, ask them if you can jump on the tractor and observe what flushes from the final strip! Also try along railway line in rank vegetation e.g. along Lawlers Rd, Helidon.

Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove - if they are around at the moment, a chance of at least hearing them along Prince Henry Drive if the figs are on.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. In the process, you may pick up something totally unexpected for the year!

Good luck!
